Power Up For 30 |
Why Power up? |
May Howard Elementary has joined every elementary school in SCCPSS and signed up to participate in the "Power up for 30" Initiative. Starting the 2015-2016 school year we will aim to implement a
before, during, and/or after school strategy to incorporate 30 minutes (or
more!) of physical activity into the school day. Our elementary schools and district representatives will work with
the Georgia Department of Public Health throughout the year tracking our
progress in these efforts. We will make an effort to participate in webinars,
email contact, and training outreach conducted by the Department of
Education, the Department of Public Health, and HealthMPowers.
This is our commitment to fostering an enhanced learning environment as
we continue to strive for higher academic achievement. We will work
together to pool our resources and collaborate with community members,
parents, and nearby facilities to reach our goal of 30 minutes of integrated
physical activity. Count us in for the MOVEment to SHAPE minds! Also, to learn more about health M powers please click the link below.

Check out the ways we are going to start incorporating physical activity!
School IntergrationClassroom Integration:
Integrating physical activity into the classroom can help improve concentration, behavior, and academic transitions between subjects, an energy booster or as a method of teaching/reinforcing academic concepts. Recess:
Recess plays an important role in student academic achievement, social development, and classroom behavior. Before and After School:
Before and after school program provide excellent opportunities for students to increase physical activity outside of the regular school day. Staff Engagement:
In a national survey, 51% of teachers reported gaining weight after entering the career field. The top contributors to their weight gain were sedentary roles and time constraints that lead to unhealthy behaviors that make it difficult to stay fit. Physical Education:
A Quality Physical Education Program focuses on Health-related fitness, physical competencies and creating a positive attitude about physical activity. Family and Community:
Families supporting their children's physical activity can lead to early adoption of a physical active lifestyle. |
